How do AltaVista Search eXtensions 97 products and services fit together?

System Requirements

AltaVista Search Workgroup eXtension 97

Find anything, everything -
on your workgroup's file server

Unlock vital business information all across your enterprise network. Your information has been held prisoner by its sheer volume, and the lack of software sophisticated enough to handily zero-in on specific information. Now AltaVista provides a complete solution to finding information you need wherever it's hiding in your enterprise.

The newest member of the AltaVista Search 97 product family, the AltaVista Search Workgroup eXtension 97 lets you speedily search through your local workgroup's file servers.

Like all members of the AltaVista Search family,

  • it supports over 200 file formats
  • it works seamlessly with any other AltaVista Search software, including the AltaVista Search public service (at altavista.digital.com)
  • you use it with any standard browser, with the familiar AltaVista Search screen

Tech View

  • Any file server connected to the Workgroup eXtension server can be indexed. Connections between the Workgroup eXtension server and the file servers are not limited to TCP/IP. This means Novell file servers, PATHWORKS file servers, LAN Manager file servers, NT file servers, etc… can be indexed. When a user clicks on a result hyperlink, the request is linked to the source document through the Workgroup eXtension server. This means a user connected to the AltaVista Search Workgroup eXtension 97 server with a TCP/IP connection can open something that is residing on a Novell IPX LAN
  • Users must have a graphical Web browser and a TCP/IP connection to connect to the Workgroup eXtension server. Access to the Workgroup eXtension server is controlled via URLs
  • Indexes HTML, text files, and over 200 other file formats, on Web servers. AltaVista Search WORKGROUP eXtension 97 provides search-and-retrieval capabilities for over 200 different types of information stored on Web servers - not only all the HTML and text files, but data in virtually every popular format, including Microsoft Office 97, Adobe PDF and PostScript, Lotus SmartSuite, Qualcomm Eudora, MS Exchange, and files attached to e-mail.
  • The network operating system controls file access during the indexing and querying processes
  • Optional password protection prevents users from getting access to information they are not privileged to see. The result page will show all the "hits" within the index. Only people with the correct password can open the files displayed on the AltaVista Search 97 results Web page
  • Languages are the same as the AltaVista Search 97 Personal eXtension: Czech, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish

AltaVista Search Workgroup eXtension 97 is server-based software available for Windows NT.
