Q: What is AltaVista Search Private eXtension?

A: AltaVista Search is the most comprehensive product of its kind, giving you search and retrieval capabilities for seamlessly searching PC disk drives, the Internet, and your private intranet, and all without missing a beat. It's scaleable to fit your exact needs, handling all kinds of data such as HTML text, Microsoft Office applications (MS-Word), Lotus 1-2-3, and Freelance, to name a few.

Imagine - you could instantly recover a crucial piece of information that was buried in an e-mail message from years ago. You could find something from a presentation you thought was lost, but still dwelling deep in an obscure directory. No more endless digging into folders within folders within folders - these AltaVista Search products take you directly to the information you need.

There are four flavors of AltaVista Search Private eXtension:

  • AltaVista Search My Computer Private eXtension (Windows 95 and Windows NT desktops)
  • AltaVista Search Workgroup Private eXtension (intranet Web servers and LAN/WAN file servers)
  • AltaVista Search Intranet Private eXtension (intranets)
  • AltaVista Search Intranet XL Private eXtension (intranets; runs on 64-bit Alpha)

Q: Does AltaVista Search Private eXtension search directories?

A: Yes - it looks through each file on drives that a user has mounted, whether the drive is local or remote. If you were to ask AltaVista Private Extensions to look for the words "rural housing loan and grant programs", it would look through every file on the drives mounted on the computer system where the software is installed.

Q: What types of files does AltaVista Search Private eXtension index?

A: AltaVista Search My Computer Private eXtension is capable of indexing word processing, presentation graphics, spreadsheets, e-mail, project planning applications, and more. For a full list of the data types and file types that the product supports, please refer to the 'Read Me' file that was included with the product download.

If the "pre-alpha" software does not handle a file type you need, please let us know by sending an e-mail to avs-personal-bug@digital.com .

  • Great for centralized and distributed search-and-retrieval servers
  • Supports terabytes of Web data
  • Supports multi-national intranets
  • Indexes HTML and text files on Web servers (other data types coming soon)
  • Indexes databases via AltaVista Search Toolkit

Q: How does indexing the intranet Web work?

A: AltaVista Search Intranet PX gathers all the information on your intranet and selected World Wide Web sites by continuously crawling these Web sites and creating an index to this information. AltaVista Search Intranet PX is designed to need very little administration. You can set the crawling and indexing routines to perform their task automatically, with no overt administration. If you want to manage the information gathering, you can exert as much control over the process as you need. For example, you can crawl some sites more frequently than others.

Q: What is the difference between the PC version and the server (Intranet and Workgroup) versions?

A: Both the client and the server versions will be able to index the same types of files. The client version will reside on your PC, and will be platform dependent. We are currently offering it only for the Win95 and WinNT operating systems.

The Search Private eXtension for the Intranet will reside on your server, and will also be platform dependent. We will be offering it in WinNT, and Digital Unix (64 bit Alpha). Clients will be able to access the SearchPX on the server through the use of their Internet browser.

Q: What is the difference between the AltaVista Search Public Service and the AltaVista Search Private eXtensions?

A: The technology behind AltaVista Search Private eXtension software is an evolution of the world's fastest and most popular search engine, the AltaVista Search Public Service. This free, public site (http://altavista.digital.com) lets users search an index of every word on every Web page across the Internet and connect in seconds. The AltaVista Search Public Service is a commercial-free site; and, it does not crawl/index LAN/WAN file servers, PC-based information, or burrow through firewalls.

AltaVista Search Intranet and Workgroup Private eXtensions index private information located behind corporate firewalls on intranet Web servers and file servers.

AltaVista Search My Computer Private eXtension adds the ability to index information located on an individual's Windows 95 or NT PC. Application files for PCs (word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, e-mail, etc.) are located and indexed for easy retrieval.
