Q: How does AltaVista Forum provide security?

A: AltaVista Forum uses passwords to restrict access to confidential information. Read and Write privileges can be defined by user, folder, discussion, or document. Auditing of who accesses the forum lets you track access and modification to any information maintained by AltaVista Forum.

AltaVista Forum 2.0:

  • Uses the current open standards for authenticating Web users
  • Supports network firewalls and encryption utilities

Q: What future enhancements are planned for AltaVista Forum?

  • Integration with SMTP mail systems
  • Integrated synchronous conferencing capabilities (eg. videoconferencing)
  • Integrated tools enabling individual team members to create their own Web pages
  • Gateways to major legacy applications/databases
  • Expanded list of supported HTTP servers

Q: Does it let you collaborate through firewalls?

A: The upload capabilities are based on support from the browser. Some firewalls allow pass thru and some don't. It all depends on how the sysop set up the firewall.

Q: Does it include Video Conferencing?

A: Forum 2.0 does not include any videoconferencing capabilities, but that certainly does not preclude you from using CUSeeMe, for instance, on your system.

Q: What happened to Workgroup Web or the AltaVista LAN Browser??

A: The award-winning Workgroup Web is now AltaVista Forum 2.0 .
The power of the Workgroup Web (aka AltaVista LAN Browser) is now available for HTTP servers, in AltaVista's Forum 2.0.
You can read more about AltaVista Forum at http://altavista.software.digital.com/products/forum/nfintro.htm

Q: Does AltaVista Forum work with non-frames browsers?

A: The AltaVista Forum V2.0 product, with the exception of the Newspaper application, will work fine with non-frames browsers.

Q: Can some of the functions be taken off of the forum product - is it customizable?

A: It is possible to customize the Tcl code, such that functions can be taken off the AV Forum product. We know of customers, for instance, who customized the Tcl code to remove certain applications.

If you wanted to customize the Summit page, then you would need to modify _ehall.class. It's been suggested that the Tcl and the Tk Toolkit book is a fairly useful book for such a task..
