DIGITAL ANNOUNCES ALTAVISTA INTERNET SECURITY PRODUCTS FOR INTEL PLATFORMS

...AltaVista Firewall and AltaVista Tunnel now available on Windows NT and BSD/OS...

MAYNARD, Mass. -- Aug. 28, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corp. today announced new members of the AltaVista Security family -- industrial-strength Tunnel and Firewall products on Intel platforms. These products implement the AltaVista OnSite Computing vision, which enables cyberworkers to access critical business information from any location at any time. AltaVista Security products allow users to simply and cost-effectively protect private networks from the Internet and create secure Virtual Private Networks (VPN) over the Internet. In addition, the company announced that AltaVista Firewall has been certified by the National Computing Security Association (NCSA) as the industry's first approved firewall on Windows NT.

"We're pleased to offer the simplicity and security of the respected AltaVista Firewall and AltaVista Tunnel products on both Intel and Alpha platforms," said Ilene H. Lang, vice president of Digital's Internet Software Business Unit. "As the only provider of an NCSA-certified firewall for Windows NT, we are proud that users of the AltaVista Firewall can be assured that their security system meets one of the highest, independent, industry standards."

"I thought the UNIX version of AltaVista Firewall was the easiest, most secure firewall we could set up. The NT version is easier still. The market wants this product," said Dave Backstrom, president of Vital Integration Solutions, Inc., West Des Moines, Iowa. "The user-tiered pricing for AltaVista Firewall (NT) makes the best product in the industry affordable for the little guy."

According to Philip DeLeon, president of Onyx Computers, Richmond Hill, Ontario, a reseller of AltaVista products, "The best just got better. With Digital announcing AltaVista Firewall and AltaVista Tunnel support for Windows NT and BSD/OS, our Intel and Alpha customers can now incorporate state-of-the-art secure technology into their private networks with peace of mind."

Remote-based individuals or members of remote LANs and WANs can securely communicate and share information with individuals and groups on a company Intranets without the expense of leased lines, modem banks, 800 numbers or long distance dial-up access.

The NCSA-Certified AltaVista Firewall deploys a unique combination of technologies that place a highly-secure, yet flexible barrier between private networks, the Internet and other private networks.
