DIGITAL ANNOUNCES ALTAVISTA MAIL -- A POWERFUL, LOW-COST INTERNET MAIL SOLUTION ...Software provides easy-to-manage mail server for Internet users; available to download for 60-day trial... MAYNARD, Mass., May 24, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today announced its AltaVista Mail server software, the first in a new line of AltaVista software products. Featuring built-in connectivity to the Internet, AltaVista Mail provides departments and small enterprises with powerful, low-cost Internet mail capabilities that can be added to a web server or existing electronic mail software - including the ability to mail multimedia documents over the Internet. AltaVista Mail integrates seamlessly with enterprise mail systems such as Microsoft Exchange. When used with the optional Internet Connector for Microsoft Exchange, AltaVista Mail provides the capability to launch applications for viewing documents attached to messages by simply clicking. Digital and its partners provide gateways and connectors to enable the same interoperability between AltaVista Mail and Lotus Notes. Digital's ALL-IN-1 and MAILWorks products can be connected in a similar manner. According to Michael Ernst, computer systems administrator at the Woods Hole Research Center in Woods Hole, Mass., "AltaVista Mail is one aspect of our network I don't even have to think about. Installation was easy... maintenance is a breeze, and the graphical interface is elegantly and efficiently designed." Built on Internet Standards AltaVista Mail incorporates open Internet standards, ensuring communication and interoperability within an organization and beyond. In addition to the Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) and Post Office Protocol (POP3) services, it supports Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME), which enables users to send and receive richly formatted documents, spreadsheets, and multimedia application files. Digital plans to add Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP4) and List Server capabilities later this summer -- adding significant mailing list capability and making it even easier for mobile and teleworkers to access their mail while out of the office. Digital will extend AltaVista Mail by seamlessly connecting popular e-mail systems such as IBM/Lotus cc:Mail and Microsoft Mail to the Internet. Easy to Setup, Configure and Manage "The AltaVista Mail software is suitable for non-expert environments because it is easy and intuitive to setup and configure," said Jeanette Horan, vice president of product development for Digital's Internet Software Business Unit. "You do not need to be a mail expert to administer the product. During testing many customers had the mail service up and running in minutes, saving time and money." AltaVista Mail setup and administration is intuitive and is easily performed locally or remotely using a web browser. A Windows management interface is available as an alternative to using a browser. Users can modify their password or redirect their mail using either method. Choice of Client and Desktop AltaVista Mail supports a full range of popular Internet e-mail clients, including the Microsoft Exchange Windows 95 client, Netscape Navigator V2.0 mail client, Network Computing Devices Z-Mail and Qualcomm Eudora, and other clients which support the POP3 protocol. Secure and Reliable AltaVista Mail includes built-in features to detect and report suspicious events. A security operations log runs continuously and notifies the system manager of irregularities. The AltaVista Mail server can be used in conjunction with many firewall and tunnel products, including AltaVista Firewall and AltaVista Tunnel. Pricing and Availability AltaVista Mail is priced at $495 per server and is available today. The product runs on Windows NT (Intel and Alpha) platforms. There is no per-client license required. A 60-day trial version of the product can be downloaded from http://www.altavista.software.digital.com.
